On March 23, 2026, Larry Fink, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of BlackRock issued his yearly investor letter entitled Growing with Your Country: Thoughts from a Long Term Optimist that outlined his analysis of the structural obstacles facing both the U.S. Economy as well as those globally, while advocating for the adoption of digital assets and tokenization for the purpose of modernizing existing financial systems and creating greater levels of shared prosperity.<h2>Capitalism Works — But Not for Enough People</h2>Fink begins his analysis by noting that the capital markets have produced tremendous amounts of wealth over the last few decades and that most of that wealth has gone to people who already own an asset, whether it be a share in stock, a piece of real estate, or some other type of asset that appreciates in value. In contrast, employees and workers who rely solely on their wages to live (and save) have experienced very little of that wealth and therefore suffer from an increasing amount of financial and economic anxiety. Fink also states, "the system is working for some people, but not with enough people". The wide separation has its roots in the previous years; there have been disparities that occurred continuously from 1989 to the present date, where a dollar's worth of investment in U.S. stocks has grown at rate more than 15 times higher than the value of average income and average wages. Both average income earners and wage earners do not participate heavily (compared with other industrialized Nations) in capital markets as owners of productive assets; they tend to function as renters or low-yield savings account owners. Low rates of participation in the U.S. capital markets (with approximately 40% of the population having no exposure to equities and/or private equity) cause feelings of exclusion and may be increasing over time. Fink links the issues he discusses to larger forces impacting our society and economy like widening wealth disparity, and that solely relying on wages or government transfers will not fix our economy but requires additional ways to link people's saving to long-term market returns, to restore the belief of the people in the efficiency of a free market system. He also argues that short-term trading (speculation) is not going to fix the structural problems within our economy. Only long-term stable investment will generate the capital necessary to create the jobs, construct the necessary infrastructure for a growing economy, and develop industries.<h2>Global Reordering and the Need for Domestic Capital</h2>The letter talks about a planet that is going through fundamental change and about countries pursuing an increasing degree of self-sufficiency in terms of energy supply, mutual defense, technological and economic independence, and supply chains. Such transformation will create tremendous costs; the result will also require large amounts of capital investment over the long term as opposed to flowing in on a brittle short-term basis. Growing debt levels and competing obligations are putting pressure on government coffers and limiting their ability to provide all funding required for necessary projects alone. According to Fink, it is vital for the private capital markets to assume a much larger share of financing domestic growth. Investing savings only in one’s country companies and infrastructure for decades leads to an alignment of interests that is very powerful. He refers to it as a “civic miracle” when capital markets efficiently allocate savings to productive investment, linking the financial future of the individual to that of the State. He provides examples from countries that are innovating public policy to enhance the link between capital markets and the economy, such as tax-advantaged savings in Japan and digital infrastructure projects in India that lower the barriers to entry for the economy.<h2>Artificial Intelligence: Opportunity and Risk of Widening Gaps</h2>According to Fink, artificial intelligence is a game-changer for business on par with the advent of computers; AI has the capability to increase productivity, generate new economic value, and redefine the way industries operate. However, he cautions that the benefits of AI will likely be focused on those companies that have better data, infrastructure, and capital as well as on earlier investors in or owners of assets related to AI. The historical trend of technological change has demonstrated that it is typically first to benefit those that are already positioned to profit from technological benefits. If action is not taken to intentionally broaden the ownership of Artificial Intelligence technology, AI could create or magnify existing inequalities and do so at an increased rate. Therefore, Fink believes that the emphasis should extend beyond protecting individual jobs to increasing the number of people who participate in owning infrastructure and companies that are driven by Artificial Intelligence technology. He supports additional approaches such as improved retirement programs, emergency savings accounts with various options for withdrawing funds, and assets to invest in from the time a child is born until they reach adulthood. Implementing these solutions will allow greater numbers of people to create wealth and participate in technological advances rather than just being able to see it occur.<h2>Tokenization: Updating the Plumbing of Finance</h2>One of the key themes in the 2026 letter is tokenization - which is the process of representing real-life assets on digital ledgers. Often tokenization is done using blockchain technologies. Fink sees tokenization as an update of the infrastructure (more commonly known as the “plumbing”) of today’s financial system. The new infrastructure will facilitate easier issuance, trading, settlement and access to investment products and services. He compares today's tokenization to the early days of the internet, claiming that they are both in a state of change with great potential to alter the world positively; just as the internet was new at that time. Many of the old-fashioned markets require numerous middlemen, long timeframes before trades settle (sometimes 2 days or more), and high amounts of capital required before trading. Tokenization removes many of the frictions tied to traditional finance by allowing for fractional ownership, almost instantaneous settlement of trades, lower transaction costs and providing more transparency due to having reliable records on the blockchain. Primary benefits involve significantly reducing hindrances to access. Real estate, private debt, and infrastructure can all be turned into small, low-cost digital tokens that allow many everyday individuals and small retail investors to have some percentage of ownership in the highest value asset classes in history. By allowing fractional ownership of these asset classes, markets that were historically only available for institutional and ultra-high-net-worth+ clients will open up to the public. According to Fink, Digital Wallets have taken over the majority of payments made daily around the globe, with approximately 50% of people now using them on a regular basis. In his view, these same wallets can also store Tokenized Security, allowing long-term investment to become as simple and accessible as sending someone money or paying a bill. If adequate Regulatory Safeguards and Digital Identity Verification were in place, potentially billions of additional people would be able to access the Capital Markets. BlackRock has made substantial progress in tokenized assets by establishing one of the largest treasury funds in the world through tokenization. The number of assets under management that are tied to digital assets has grown dramatically for the firm and BlackRock continues to invest in building its ability to connect (or bridge) between traditional markets and token markets. According to Fink, tokenizing assets should complement (or work in conjunction with) existing systems and require a consistent regulatory structure that maintains market stability, while simultaneously fostering innovation.<h2>Building Broader Participation Through Policy and Technology</h2>Fink advocates a holistic strategy for expanding access to ownership. Modernizing retirement savings systems is essential so sufficient savings can begin and continue as early as possible. Current proposals within the United States include expanding Social Security offerings to allow for greater investment diversity while protecting the rights of both existing and soon-to-be-receiving retirees. The adoption of best practices on a worldwide scale can help countries around the world attract millions of new investors through Japan's expanded NISA accounts. Digital public infrastructure in other countries shows how technology can eliminate barriers and reduce costs. In addition, combining financial literacy and user-friendly digital tools will provide greater access to those who need it most. He urges policy makers, industry leaders, and technology providers to work together to provide updated guidance for interoperability between digital and traditional assets. Insist on strong protections against illegal behavior, set robust standards for counterparties, and provide safeguards for all investors before finalizing any agreement.<h2>A Long-Term Optimist’s Balanced View</h2>Fink keeps his optimistic point of view based on history through the entire letter. Investors who have been patient in the past have been rewarded; the best example of this is an individual who has invested in the S&amp;P 500 during the last twenty years has received an excellent compound return as a result of being patient to ride out all that volatility in between. He recognizes the risks that exist, such as geopolitical instability, high levels of debt, rapidly changing technology, and the potential for increased social pressure due to unequal wealth distribution; however, he believes that with careful planning, these risk factors can be used to benefit everyone. Societies will benefit from modernizing their financial infrastructure through the use of tokenization and increasing the use of long-term ownership, as innovations in AI and other fields will support inclusive economic growth instead of widening the gap between the rich and the poor.Fink completes his remarks by re-emphasizing his theme of “growing with your country.” The economy becomes more resilient, the pace of innovation increases, and the social contract supporting free enterprise becomes stronger as more people own shares or participate in the capital market system. He encourages continued discussions among relevant stakeholders to develop meaningful solutions.
