This design bridges physical bullion with blockchain technology, offering a digital way to hold gold.
Tether provides a dedicated Look-up Tool on its official website. By inputting your blockchain address (Ethereum or Tron), you can view specific details, including the serial number, purity, and exact weight of the gold bar(s) associated with your XAU₮ holdings. The physical gold itself is stored in high-security vaults located in Switzerland, and the bars adhere to the "London Good Delivery" standard set by the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA).
Yes, Tether regularly publishes periodic attestation reports, typically on a quarterly basis, from independent accounting firms. These reports verify that the amount of physical gold held in the vaults matches the total number of XAU₮ tokens in circulation. Furthermore, the project is licensed and operates under the regulatory framework of El Salvador, adding another layer of oversight to its operations.
There are two primary ways to acquire XAU₮. Investors can purchase directly from Tether, although this requires a minimum purchase of 50 XAU₮ and full Know Your Customer (KYC) verification. Alternatively, for most retail users, XAU₮ is readily available on leading crypto exchanges. On these platforms, there is no minimum purchase requirement, allowing users to buy fractions of a fine troy ounce, down to very small denominations.
Yes, XAU₮ can be redeemed for physical gold, but high thresholds apply, typically requiring enough tokens for one full gold bar (around 400–430 ounces). If you don't meet this, you can opt for the gold to be sold in the Swiss market for cash, less fees. Regarding fees, there are no ongoing custody fees. A one-time 0.25% fee applies for issuance or redemption directly through Tether. Standard blockchain network gas fees also apply for transfers.
