Wonderland is a decentralized reserve currency protocol that launched on the Avalanche blockchain. It was designed as a fork of Olympus DAO, meaning it shared a similar economic structure and goal: to create a global, decentralized reserve currency backed by a treasury of digital assets rather than traditional fiat money. The native token of the ecosystem is called TIME. The project functioned through several core mechanics. The primary method for participants to engage was through staking. Users would lock their tokens in the protocol and receive a derivative token called MEMO in return. This process utilized a rebasing mechanism, where the supply of tokens would increase at regular intervals, and these new tokens were distributed to stakers. This was intended to incentivize long-term holding. Another feature was minting, which allowed users to provide specific assets to the treasury in exchange for discounted tokens after a certain period. This process helped the protocol build and own its own liquidity. Wonderland was part of a larger ecosystem often referred to by its community as Frog Nation. This group of projects was led by developer Daniele Sestagalli and included other platforms like Abracadabra Money and Popsicle Finance. The project gained significant attention for its community-driven approach and its promise of creating a financial system independent of centralized banking. The project faced a major turning point and significant controversy in early 2022. An anonymous blockchain researcher revealed that the pseudonymous treasury manager for Wonderland, known as Sifu, was actually Michael Patryn. Patryn was a co-founder of the defunct Canadian cryptocurrency exchange QuadrigaCX and had a history of criminal convictions related to financial fraud and identity theft. The revelation that a convicted felon was managing a massive treasury of community funds led to a crisis of confidence. Following the exposure, the community held a series of governance votes through the projects decentralized autonomous organization structure. Although there were efforts to keep the protocol running under new management, the internal divisions and the loss of trust among participants eventually led to the winding down of the project in its original form.
