Taproot refers primarily to a significant upgrade to the Bitcoin protocol, which was activated in November 2021. It is considered one of the most important enhancements to the Bitcoin network since the SegWit upgrade in 2017. The main goals of the Taproot upgrade are to improve the privacy, efficiency, and scalability of the Bitcoin network, as well as to enhance its smart contract capabilities. It was implemented as a soft fork, meaning it is backward compatible with older versions of the Bitcoin software. Over 90% of Bitcoin miners reached consensus to activate the upgrade. Taproot encompasses three Bitcoin Improvement Proposals (BIPs): BIP340 (Schnorr Signatures), BIP341 (Taproot), and BIP342 (Tapscript). Key technologies and benefits include: Schnorr Signatures: These offer a more efficient and private way to authorize transactions, allowing multiple signatures to be aggregated into a single one. This reduces the data size required for transactions, which can lead to lower transaction fees and increased transactions per block. Merkelized Abstract Syntax Trees (MAST): This technology allows for more complex smart contracts while only revealing the relevant conditions of a transaction on the blockchain, thereby enhancing privacy. Tapscript: This is an improved scripting language for Bitcoin that works with Schnorr signatures and Taproot to enable more advanced functionalities. The Taproot upgrade makes complex transactions, such as multi-signature transactions and those involving smart contracts, appear more like standard, single-signature transactions on the blockchain. This improves privacy by making it harder to distinguish between different types of transactions. It also helps to reduce the amount of data stored on the blockchain, contributing to improved scalability. The Taproot proposal was first introduced by Bitcoin developer Greg Maxwell in 2018. Building upon the Taproot upgrade, projects like "Taproot Assets" and "Taproot Exchange (TAPROOT)" have emerged. Taproot Assets is a protocol designed to enable the issuance of digital assets, including fungible currencies like stablecoins and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), on the Bitcoin blockchain and the Lightning Network.
