The Iron token, often associated with Iron Finance, was part of a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol that launched as a stablecoin. This project aimed to combine asset-backed and algorithmic liquidity strategies to maintain a peg to one US dollar. The Iron Finance ecosystem included two main tokens: IRON, the stablecoin itself, and a companion token known as STEEL or TITAN (Iron Share). The IRON token was designed to be partially collateralized by stablecoins such as USDC or BUSD, with the remaining value supported by the algorithmic mechanism involving the STEEL/TITAN token. Users could mint IRON by providing collateral, and the system used automated adjustments, including minting and burning processes of STEEL/TITAN, to try and stabilize IRON's peg. This hybrid model sought to offer capital efficiency. Iron Finance operated on multiple blockchain networks, including Polygon, BNB Smart Chain, and Fantom. However, Iron Finance experienced a notable failure, often described as a "bank run," in June 2021, which led to the de-pegging of the IRON stablecoin and affected the value of its associated TITAN token. Despite its ultimate failure, the Iron protocol is considered a significant historical event in DeFi, offering lessons in algorithmic stability, fractional collateralization, and token incentive structures. The project's website was reported to be offline since August 2024. It is worth noting that the name "Iron" is also used by other projects in the Web3 space. One such entity is a technology platform that provides stablecoin payment APIs for businesses, facilitating global payment solutions and acting as a bridge between traditional finance and digital assets. This Iron payment infrastructure company was recently acquired by MoonPay in March 2025. Another project, the "Iron Ecosystem," focuses on environmentally conscious crypto mining powered by solar energy on the Polygon network.
