Stellar is a decentralized, open-source network designed to connect the world’s financial infrastructure. Its mission is to make international money transfers fast, cheap, and accessible to everyone, especially the "unbanked" in emerging markets.
XLM serves three main roles. First, as an anti-spam mechanism, users must hold a minimum balance and pay tiny fees per transaction to prevent network abuse. Second, it acts as a bridge asset, facilitating quick and efficient trades between different fiat currencies. Third, it provides liquidity for the network's built-in decentralized exchange (DEX).
Stellar uses the unique Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP) instead of traditional mining or staking. SCP relies on "Quorum Slices," where each network node selects a group of other nodes it trusts. Consensus is achieved rapidly when these overlapping trust circles collectively agree on the validity of a transaction.
