What is SafeMoon (SFM)?

SafeMoon, often identified by the ticker SFM, is a decentralized finance project that first gained significant attention in early 2021. Originally launched on the BNB Chain, the project was designed with a specific set of tokenomics intended to discourage short-term speculation and reward long-term participants. Its core protocol involves a transaction fee mechanism where a portion of every trade is redistributed to existing holders through a process called reflection. Other portions of the fee are typically directed toward a liquidity pool or permanently removed from circulation via a burn strategy to create a deflationary effect. In late 2021, the project underwent a major technical transition from its original contract, known as V1, to an updated version called V2. This migration involved a consolidation of the token supply at a ratio of one thousand to one, aimed at improving the efficiency of the smart contract and expanding its utility for future integrations. Along with the token, the project developed an ecosystem of products including the SafeMoon Wallet, which features a security system called Orbital Shield, and a decentralized exchange known as SafeMoon Swap. The project has faced significant challenges and legal complications. In early 2023, the protocol suffered a security breach involving its liquidity pool, which led to a substantial loss of assets. Later that year, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission and the Department of Justice brought formal charges against the project's executive leadership. These charges included allegations of fraud, money laundering, and the unregistered offering of securities. Following these legal actions, SafeMoon LLC filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in December 2023. As of 2025, the project’s original corporate entity is defunct, and its former chief executive has been convicted on multiple federal fraud charges. Despite the dissolution of the original company, there have been community-led efforts to continue the project's legacy. This includes reports of a migration to the Solana blockchain and the acquisition of certain project assets by the VGX Foundation. These initiatives aim to restructure the governance model and revitalize the ecosystem through new community-driven platforms and airdrop strategies, though the project remains separated from its original founding team and corporate structure. SafeMoon (SFM) FAQ

SafeMoon is effectively defunct. SafeMoon US, LLC filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in late 2023, leading to the cessation of all official operations. The project’s leadership has faced significant legal action, and the community has largely transitioned from active supporters to participants in litigation groups seeking restitution.
The SEC and DOJ charged the project’s CEO, founder, and former CTO with securities fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering. Federal investigators alleged that the executives misappropriated investor funds for personal use rather than project development. By late 2025, the CEO was found guilty of conspiracy to defraud investors and money laundering.
SafeMoon utilized a 10% fee on every transaction. Half of this fee was redistributed to existing token holders as "reflections," while the other half was intended for the liquidity pool. A portion of these reflections was sent to a "burn address" to reduce the total circulating supply over time, a mechanism designed to reward long-term holders and create scarcity.
In late 2021, the project migrated to SFM V2 to consolidate the token supply and improve contract flexibility. A major controversy arose when a 100% tax was implemented on V1 transactions to force migration. This resulted in many holders losing their entire token balances when they attempted to transfer or migrate their assets without following the specific required protocols.
Liquidity for SFM has almost entirely disappeared. Major exchanges, including LBank, and other trading platforms delisted the token following bankruptcy filings and legal charges. Additionally, decentralized liquidity pools were either compromised during technical exploits or seized during legal proceedings, leaving holders with no viable way to execute trades.
Holders are generally advised to monitor bankruptcy court filings to submit claims through the court-appointed trustee. While legal settlements have been reached involving classes of defrauded investors, recovery amounts are expected to be very small. For security, holders should move their assets to secure non-custodial wallets rather than using the defunct official app, which is no longer maintained.
