SafeMoon, often identified by the ticker SFM, is a decentralized finance project that first gained significant attention in early 2021. Originally launched on the BNB Chain, the project was designed with a specific set of tokenomics intended to discourage short-term speculation and reward long-term participants. Its core protocol involves a transaction fee mechanism where a portion of every trade is redistributed to existing holders through a process called reflection. Other portions of the fee are typically directed toward a liquidity pool or permanently removed from circulation via a burn strategy to create a deflationary effect. In late 2021, the project underwent a major technical transition from its original contract, known as V1, to an updated version called V2. This migration involved a consolidation of the token supply at a ratio of one thousand to one, aimed at improving the efficiency of the smart contract and expanding its utility for future integrations. Along with the token, the project developed an ecosystem of products including the SafeMoon Wallet, which features a security system called Orbital Shield, and a decentralized exchange known as SafeMoon Swap. The project has faced significant challenges and legal complications. In early 2023, the protocol suffered a security breach involving its liquidity pool, which led to a substantial loss of assets. Later that year, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission and the Department of Justice brought formal charges against the project's executive leadership. These charges included allegations of fraud, money laundering, and the unregistered offering of securities. Following these legal actions, SafeMoon LLC filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in December 2023. As of 2025, the project’s original corporate entity is defunct, and its former chief executive has been convicted on multiple federal fraud charges. Despite the dissolution of the original company, there have been community-led efforts to continue the project's legacy. This includes reports of a migration to the Solana blockchain and the acquisition of certain project assets by the VGX Foundation. These initiatives aim to restructure the governance model and revitalize the ecosystem through new community-driven platforms and airdrop strategies, though the project remains separated from its original founding team and corporate structure.
