The protocol had been tricked, allowing for the creation of counterfeit assets. In layman's terms: The system believed that an asset had been deposited when it had not.Using this defect in the core functionality of Hyperbridge, a hacker was able to call the minting function and create 1 billion DOT Tokens on the destination chain. To put this in context, the current total of Polkadots is approximately 1.4 Billion DOT Tokens. The hacker almost tried to increase the supply of DOT Tokens on the market by 70% within seconds. The market would have reacted to that influx of new assets if those assets had made it to the exchanges and liquidity pool.
