Cosmos Hub is the central blockchain of the Cosmos network, a decentralized ecosystem designed to solve the problem of blockchain isolation. The first is the Cosmos SDK, which is a toolkit that simplifies the process for developers to build their own application-specific blockchains. The second is the Tendermint consensus engine, a system that uses a proof of stake model to achieve high speed and security. The third pillar is the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol, known as IBC. This protocol functions as a messaging system that enables different blockchains to transfer assets and data without needing a centralized bridge. The native token of the network is called ATOM. It has several primary functions within the ecosystem. First, it is used for staking, which helps secure the network by rewarding users who commit their tokens to support validator nodes. Second, ATOM is the currency used to pay for transaction fees on the Cosmos Hub. Third, it serves as a governance tool, granting holders the right to vote on proposals that affect the development and future direction of the network. A notable advancement in the project is Interchain Security. This feature allows the Cosmos Hub to lend its established security to newer or smaller blockchains in the network. By doing so, these emerging chains can benefit from the robust validator set of the Hub, while ATOM stakers can potentially earn additional rewards for securing these extra networks. The project was founded by Jae Kwon and Ethan Buchman and is supported by the Interchain Foundation. Rather than trying to force every application onto a single chain, the Cosmos Hub promotes a vision of many specialized blockchains that maintain their own rules and sovereignty while remaining part of a larger, interconnected web.
