All-Time High (ATH)

2024-08-09
The all-time high (ATH) is the highest price reached by an asset on an exchange. It reflects market sentiment and trading behavior and is a concentrated reflection of investor psychology.

The all-time high (ATH) refers to the highest price reached by an asset on an exchange. For example, if ABC's stock price was $50 per share at the time of its IPO, then traded as high as $200 per share for a period of time, and then fell to $100, we can say that ABC's stock price once reached an all-time high of $200.

In the bull market of 2024, many cryptocurrencies set new all-time highs. Bitcoin hit a new high in mid-March. In some markets, each Bitcoin traded at more than $74,000, but it is generally believed that the all-time high price of Bitcoin is about $73,777. However, Ethereum did not create a new all-time high in 2024, and its highest price remained at $4,868 during the 2021 bull run.

The all-time high represents the theoretical highest selling price of an asset during a specific period of time, and also represents the highest price another trader is willing to pay for the asset. Due to the divisible nature of most digital assets, the all-time high may be derived by trading a small portion of the asset, rather than a complete piece or token. For example, at the peak of the bull market, a trader may have purchased 0.1 Bitcoin for $7,000 before a big drop. Proportionally, this would bring the new all-time high price of Bitcoin to $70,000 per unit, even though only 0.1 Bitcoin was traded at this price.

The concept of all-time high also applies to the value of market cap. Market cap refers to the total market value of an asset, and it is also an important indicator of market performance.

In addition to cryptocurrencies, NFTs (non-fungible tokens) also have their own all-time highs. The highest price of an NFT can refer to the highest transaction price of a single NFT or the highest price of the entire series. For example, the highest price of the BAYC (Bored Ape Yacht Club) series was 769ETH for BAYC #2087 on September 30, 2021, which was worth more than $2 million at the time, and a particular BAYC may have never been traded.

The opposite of the historical high price is the "historical low price" (ATL), which refers to the lowest price reached by an asset on an exchange, usually recorded after the asset is listed and starts trading.

The historical high price is not only a number, but also a reflection of market sentiment and trading behavior. It represents the great enthusiasm and confidence of people in the market for a certain asset. At this price point, buyers and sellers reached a consensus, forming a historical high price record. Understanding and studying the historical high price can help us better understand market fluctuations and investor psychology, and then make more informed investment decisions.
