ARTHSWAP WRAPPED ASTR (WASTR) FAQ
What is the difference between native ASTR and Wrapped ASTR (WASTR)?
ASTR is the native token of the Astar Network, primarily used for gas fees, governance, and dApp Staking on the Substrate layer. WASTR is an ERC-20 compatible version of the token, created to allow ASTR to interact with Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) smart contracts and decentralized applications. They are pegged 1:1, meaning one WASTR is always backed by one native ASTR.
How can I wrap native ASTR into WASTR?
To wrap native ASTR, users typically use an ecosystem portal or supported bridge. After connecting a Substrate or EVM-compatible wallet, you navigate to the assets section, locate ASTR, and select the 'Wrap' option. This process locks your native ASTR in a smart contract and mints an equivalent amount of WASTR to your EVM-compatible address. Ensure you have a small amount of native ASTR remaining to cover network gas fees.
Can I use WASTR for native dApp Staking?
No. The Astar Network's native dApp Staking protocol only accepts native ASTR tokens. If you hold WASTR and wish to participate in native staking, you must first unwrap it back into the native ASTR version. However, WASTR can be used in various decentralized finance (DeFi) activities, such as providing liquidity in trading pairs or earning yield in external pools, which are distinct from the network's official staking protocol.
What is the distinction between WASTR and wstASTR?
WASTR is simply a wrapped version of ASTR designed for EVM compatibility; it does not generate staking rewards by itself. Conversely, wstASTR (Wrapped Staked ASTR) is a liquid staking token. When you stake ASTR through a liquid staking protocol, you receive wstASTR. This token represents your staked position and is value-accruing, meaning it automatically reflects staking rewards over time, unlike standard WASTR.
Why is my WASTR not visible in my EVM-compatible wallet?
If your tokens do not appear after wrapping, you likely need to manually add the WASTR contract address to your wallet interface. Ensure your wallet is set to the Astar Network and use the contract address: 0x37795FdD8C165CaB4D6c05771D564d80439CD093. If the network is set incorrectly (such as to Ethereum Mainnet), the tokens will not be visible even if the wrap was successful.
What are the primary use cases for WASTR?
WASTR is used to access the broader DeFi ecosystem on the Astar EVM layer. Users wrap their ASTR to trade for other ecosystem tokens on decentralized exchanges (DEXs), participate in decentralized lending and borrowing as collateral, or provide liquidity to yield farming pools. It essentially acts as a bridge for the native token to function within the standard ERC-20 environment used by most smart contract applications.
