Velodrome Finance is the leading Decentralized Exchange (DEX) and "liquidity hub" on the Optimism network. It employs a unique ve(3,3) model, integrating features from established DeFi protocols. This model combines efficient trading capabilities, low-slippage stable swaps, and a system for governance-incentivized liquidity provision, positioning it as a core component of the Optimism ecosystem and the broader Superchain.

$VELO is an ERC-20 utility token primarily used to reward liquidity providers through emissions. $veVELO, on the other hand, is a governance NFT (ERC-721). It is created by locking $VELO tokens for a chosen duration, up to four years. Holders of $veVELO gain significant voting power, allowing them to determine the allocation of $VELO emissions to various liquidity pools within the Velodrome ecosystem.

This is a common point of confusion for users. There is indeed another project called "Velo Labs" which also uses the ticker symbol VELO and operates on different blockchain networks. Velodrome Finance is specifically the Optimism-based DEX. To avoid accidentally acquiring the wrong token, always verify the smart contract address and ensure you are interacting with the official Velodrome Finance assets on the Optimism network, especially when trading on exchanges or using decentralized applications.

You can earn rewards in two main ways. Firstly, by Liquidity Provision, where you deposit token pairs into a pool to receive $VELO emissions as a reward for contributing to the pool's liquidity. Secondly, through Voting, by locking your $VELO to obtain $veVELO. As a $veVELO holder, you can vote for specific liquidity pools, and in return, you receive 100% of the trading fees generated by those pools, along with "bribes" or external incentives from projects seeking increased liquidity.

"Bribes," also known as incentives, are a key mechanism in Velodrome's governance. Other projects or token issuers offer these external rewards (e.g., stablecoins, native tokens) to $veVELO holders. The purpose is to encourage voters to direct $VELO emissions towards specific liquidity pools that contain the bribing project's tokens. By doing so, these projects attract more liquidity to their pools, benefiting from increased trading volume and stability, while voters receive additional yield on top of trading fees.

Rewards earned from Velodrome, such as voter rewards and "bribes," are typically not automatically pushed to your crypto wallet. Instead, they are often distributed as a stream or become available for collection at the conclusion of an epoch cycle. To access these earnings, you must proactively visit the designated "Rewards" page within the official Velodrome decentralized application. From there, you can manually claim your accumulated rewards, which will then be transferred to your connected wallet balance.
