TERRA (LUNA) FAQ
What was Terra (LUNA) and TerraUSD (UST)?
Terra was a blockchain platform designed for decentralized finance, featuring algorithmic stablecoins. LUNA was its native cryptocurrency, used for transaction fees, governance, and critically, to maintain the price peg of its stablecoins. TerraUSD (UST) was Terra's algorithmic stablecoin, intended to hold a 1:1 peg with the US dollar. Its stability mechanism involved swapping UST for LUNA and vice versa; burning one asset to mint the other, without direct fiat currency reserves.
How did the Terra (LUNA) ecosystem collapse?
The Terra (LUNA) ecosystem collapsed in May 2022 following the de-pegging of its algorithmic stablecoin, UST. This 'death spiral' began when a significant amount of UST was unstaked and liquidated, causing its price to drop. As UST fell, attempts to arbitrage by swapping UST for LUNA led to the massive minting of new LUNA tokens, causing hyperinflation and a severe price crash for LUNA. This removed the backing for UST, leading both to near-zero values. Contributing factors included the inherent fragility of the algorithmic design, high yields offered by Anchor Protocol, and insufficient reserves from the Luna Foundation Guard.
What were the consequences of the Terra (LUNA) crash?
The Terra (LUNA) crash had profound consequences. It resulted in substantial financial losses for numerous investors. The event sent shockwaves throughout the broader cryptocurrency market, contributing to a widespread market downturn and affecting other major digital assets. Regulators globally responded with increased scrutiny on stablecoins and the wider crypto industry, calling for more robust oversight. Additionally, the situation led to legal actions, including an arrest warrant for a co-founder on charges related to market law violations.
What happened to LUNA after the crash? Is there a "new LUNA"?
Following the collapse of the original Terra chain, now referred to as Terra Classic, a new Terra chain (Terra 2.0) was launched. This new chain introduced a new LUNA token, while the original LUNA token was rebranded as LUNC (Luna Classic). Airdrops of the new LUNA were distributed to existing holders of the Terra Classic chain, based on snapshots taken before and after the de-peg event. The new Terra chain primarily uses LUNA for staking, governance, purchasing digital art, and paying transaction fees.
Can I still stake LUNA or LUNC?
Yes, users can still engage in staking activities for both LUNC and the new LUNA. Staking for LUNC can be performed on Terra Station. Similarly, the new LUNA is also stakeable on Terra Station. Staking involves delegating tokens to validators, which are entities responsible for processing transactions and securing the network. In return for supporting the network's operations and security, stakers receive rewards, typically in the form of transaction fees generated within the ecosystem.
What is Terra Station?
Terra Station serves as the official wallet and interface for the Terra blockchain ecosystem. It enables users to perform various essential functions. Through Terra Station, individuals can securely create new digital wallets or connect to their existing ones. It facilitates the management of cryptocurrency funds within the Terra ecosystem. Moreover, Terra Station allows users to actively participate in key network functions, such as staking their tokens to contribute to network security and engaging in governance proposals to influence the blockchain's future development and direction.
