sbETH, or Sui Bridged Ether, represents native Ethereum (ETH) on the Sui blockchain. It's a "wrapped" or "bridged" version created when ETH is sent from the Ethereum mainnet to Sui via the native Sui Bridge. This token allows users to utilize their Ethereum value within the Sui ecosystem's decentralized finance (DeFi) applications and services. It provides a 1:1 representation of ETH's value on Sui.

While sbETH represents the value of 1 native ETH on the Sui network, it is a distinct token contract. For use within the Sui ecosystem, it functions as ETH. However, to convert sbETH back to native ETH, you must use the official Sui Bridge to send it from the Sui blockchain back to the Ethereum mainnet, completing the unbridging process. They are not interchangeable on their respective native networks without bridging.

The main way to obtain sbETH is by using the official Sui Bridge, accessible via its website. You connect your Ethereum wallet (e.g., MetaMask) and a Sui wallet. You then deposit native ETH from your Ethereum wallet. The bridge processes this transaction by locking your ETH on the Ethereum side and subsequently minting an equivalent amount of sbETH directly into your connected Sui wallet on a 1:1 basis, making it available for use on Sui.

This is a common point of inquiry. sbETH is specifically minted by the native Sui Bridge, which is secured by the Sui network's own validators. In contrast, Wormhole ETH (wETH), sometimes referred to as eth-wormhole, is minted by the Wormhole bridge, an independent third-party bridging solution. In the Sui ecosystem, there's a growing trend towards consolidating liquidity around the native sbETH, with many decentralized exchanges now prioritizing and migrating their pools to utilize this official version.

As sbETH is minted by the native Sui Bridge, its security is intrinsically linked to the same validators that secure the entire Sui network. This architecture generally offers a higher degree of trust compared to solutions from third-party bridges, as it avoids introducing additional trust assumptions or intermediaries. While the native Sui Bridge has undergone extensive audits, like all blockchain bridges, there's an inherent "bridge risk" tied to the smart contracts that secure the locked Ethereum assets on the mainnet.

The duration for bridging varies depending on the direction of the transaction. Transferring assets from Ethereum to Sui typically takes around 15–20 minutes, primarily influenced by Ethereum's transaction finality. However, bridging assets back from Sui to Ethereum is a more prolonged process. This often involves a specific challenge period or a waiting time for checkpoint finality, which can extend to several hours or even a few days, depending on the bridge's established security parameters and protocol design.
