Streamr is a decentralized, off-chain, peer-to-peer (P2P) network designed for real-time data. Often described as "BitTorrent for live data streams," it facilitates decentralized messaging for IoT, AI, and Web3 applications without relying on centralized servers. Unlike traditional cloud services, Streamr focuses on the transport of data, allowing developers to create applications that require fast, reliable, and secure data flow across a global network of independent nodes.

No, Streamr is a layer-zero protocol for data transport rather than a standalone blockchain. It utilizes established networks like Ethereum, Polygon, and Gnosis to handle identity, payments, and governance through smart contracts. However, the actual transmission of data occurs off-chain across its global network of nodes. This architecture provides the high throughput and low latency required for real-time streaming, which most traditional blockchains cannot support directly.

Following a migration that began in 2021, the project transitioned from its original token, XDATA, to the current DATA token. The $DATA token serves three primary functions: governance (voting on project proposals), incentivizing node operators to secure the network, and acting as a payment method for subscribing to data on the Streamr Hub. While there is currently no deadline for migrating old XDATA to the new DATA token, users must use the official migration tool to update their holdings for use in the current ecosystem.

There are two main ways to earn $DATA. First, participants can become Node Operators by running a Streamr node and staking tokens on "Sponsorships," which are contracts that fund specific data streams. Second, those who do not wish to manage hardware can act as Delegators, assigning their tokens to existing Operators to earn a share of the generated rewards. It is important to note that stakes are subject to "slashing" if a node fails to relay data or goes offline, which ensures network reliability.

Launched in early 2024, Streamr 1.0 marked the official transition to a fully decentralized, market-driven network. This milestone moved the protocol into a mature phase where "Sponsors" pay to have their data streams secured and distributed by independent "Operators." As part of this transition, the community adjusted token inflation to approximately 3% to provide sustainable, long-term rewards for node operators, ensuring the network remains decentralized and self-sustaining.

In the 2024–2026 roadmap, Streamr shifted toward decentralized communication tools, notably StreamrTV, a decentralized video streaming application. This project is transitioning into a broader "Streamr Beta" focused on encrypted, peer-to-peer video calls. Additionally, the project has pivoted toward "Rail," a new system for decentralized group payments. Regarding the "Monitoring Tags" sometimes seen on trading platforms, these typically reflect project volatility or shifts into new experimental beta phases rather than a change in project viability.
