Serum is a decentralized exchange protocol built on the Solana blockchain that was designed to provide the speed and convenience of centralized trading within a decentralized environment. Launched in 2020, the project was established through a collaboration involving the Serum Foundation, the Solana Foundation, and several key industry participants including FTX and Alameda Research. The core innovation of Serum was its on-chain central limit order book. Unlike many other decentralized platforms that use automated market makers, Serum allowed users to trade using a traditional order book model. This system enabled features like limit orders and bid-ask spreads directly on the blockchain, benefiting from Solana's high transaction speeds and low costs. This infrastructure served as a liquidity backend for many other applications in the Solana ecosystem. The project underwent a significant structural shift in late 2022 following the collapse of the FTX exchange. It was discovered that the security keys required to update the Serum program were held by individuals at FTX rather than being managed by a decentralized community. This presented a potential security risk, as the code could theoretically be modified by unauthorized parties. In response, the Solana developer community initiated a community-led fork of the protocol called OpenBook. This new version was created to preserve the technology while removing the centralized control associated with the original founders. The SRM token is the native utility and governance asset of the ecosystem. Originally, it was used to provide trading fee discounts for holders and allowed participants to engage in the governance of the protocol. There is also a version called MegaSerum, which represents a large quantity of SRM locked together to provide additional benefits. Since the transition to the community fork, the original Serum program is widely considered defunct, and the long-term utility and role of the SRM token within the new community-driven landscape have become subjects of ongoing discussion among developers and users.
