Rootstock (RSK) refers to the actual blockchain itself, which serves as Bitcoin's longest-standing Layer 2 network. It operates as a sidechain, leveraging Bitcoin's security through merge mining. RIF, on the other hand, stands for Rootstock Infrastructure Framework. It is a comprehensive suite of decentralized protocols and infrastructure services built on top of the Rootstock blockchain. RIF provides essential functionalities like decentralized storage, human-readable domain names, and efficient payment rails, extending the capabilities of the underlying Rootstock network.

rBTC (Smart Bitcoin) is the native gas token of the Rootstock blockchain, directly pegged 1:1 with Bitcoin (BTC). It is essential for paying transaction fees and interacting with smart contracts on the network, similar to how ETH functions on Ethereum. The RIF Token, however, is a utility and governance token. It is used to pay for specific RIF services, such as purchasing domain names via the RIF Name Service (RNS), and plays a crucial role in decentralized governance, allowing holders to vote on the network's future development and proposals.

The RIF token serves several key purposes within its ecosystem. Firstly, it enables Governance, allowing holders to stake RIF to participate in the RootstockCollective DAO and vote on critical network decisions. Secondly, it acts as a Payment method, notably for acquiring human-readable `.rsk` domains through the RIF Name Service (RNS). Thirdly, RIF can be used for Incentives, where holders can earn rewards by supporting and backing developers and projects. Lastly, RIF can be utilized as Collateral in various Bitcoin-DeFi (BTCFi) applications built on Rootstock, expanding its utility in the decentralized finance landscape.

RIF holders can earn rBTC by participating in the RootstockCollective DAO. This involves staking your RIF tokens to mint stRIF, which represents your staked amount and voting power. With stRIF, you can then "back" or vote for various builders and projects actively developing within the Rootstock network. As a reward for your participation and support in fostering ecosystem growth, you receive a share of rewards. These rewards are distributed in both rBTC (Smart Bitcoin) and additional RIF tokens every two weeks, providing a consistent incentive for active community engagement.

RIF Name Service (RNS) is the Rootstock ecosystem's equivalent of Ethereum Name Service (ENS), but tailored for Bitcoin's Layer 2. Its main function is to simplify the user experience by replacing complex, alphanumeric Bitcoin and Rootstock addresses (like `0x123...`) with easy-to-remember, human-readable names. For example, instead of sharing a long address, users can register and use a name like `yourname.rsk`. This service significantly enhances usability, making it much simpler to send, receive, and interact with digital assets and decentralized applications on the Rootstock network.

Rootstock is widely considered the most secure Bitcoin Layer 2 due to its unique "merge mining" mechanism. This means that Bitcoin miners simultaneously secure the Rootstock network while mining Bitcoin itself. A substantial portion, over 60%, of Bitcoin’s total hash power contributes to securing Rootstock. Consequently, to successfully attack Rootstock, an attacker would need to compromise a significant majority of the entire Bitcoin mining network. This strong reliance on Bitcoin's foundational security infrastructure provides Rootstock with a robust and highly resilient security posture, making it exceptionally resistant to attacks.
