The Reserve Protocol is a permissionless platform for creating and governing on-chain indexes, known as Decentralized Token Folios (DTFs) or RTokens. Its primary goal is to provide stable, long-lasting, and inflation-resistant digital currency, specifically targeting economies suffering from hyperinflation. It aims to offer a digital currency solution that mitigates volatility and protects users from currency devaluation.

Reserve Rights (RSR) is an ERC-20 token with a critical dual role as both a governance and utility asset within the Reserve Protocol. It is fundamental for unifying governance, enabling risk management, and facilitating value accrual across the entire ecosystem. RSR holders participate in decisions and contribute to the stability and security of RTokens.

RSR serves three practical functions. Firstly, stakers provide "first-loss capital" for Yield DTFs, protecting against collateral failures and earning a share of the DTF's yield. Secondly, RSR is often used for vote-locking in Index DTFs, allowing holders to govern basket changes and parameters, sharing in fees when applicable. Thirdly, a portion of mint and TVL fees from Index DTFs is used to market-buy and burn RSR, creating a deflationary mechanism.

DTFs, or RTokens, are fully asset-backed ERC-20 tokens created using Reserve's open-source smart contracts. They represent various baskets of assets, from yield-generating strategies to diverse crypto market indexes. There are two main types: Yield DTFs, which diversify across yield strategies and are protected by RSR stakers, and Index DTFs, which manage diversified token portfolios and charge minting and TVL fees.

Reserve stablecoins and RTokens are backed by a basket of cryptocurrencies managed by smart contracts, providing robust, on-chain collateral. The RSR token is vital for stability, especially for the Reserve stablecoin (RSV), through arbitrage opportunities. If a collateral asset in a Yield DTF loses value, staked RSR can be "slashed" to cover the losses, ensuring the DTF's peg remains intact and maintaining its promised value.

RSR stands out due to its integral role within a unique dual-token stablecoin system. This system is meticulously designed to maintain 100% or more on-chain collateral backing for its stable assets. While the stablecoins RSR supports aim to mitigate volatility and provide a stable digital alternative, especially in high-inflation environments, RSR itself is a volatile asset. Its primary function is to secure and govern the stability mechanism, rather than being a stable value itself.
