Puffer Finance is a decentralized native liquid restaking protocol built on the Ethereum network and the EigenLayer framework. Its primary objective is to enhance the decentralization and security of the Ethereum ecosystem by making it easier and safer for individuals to participate as validators. A core innovation of the project is its anti-slashing technology known as Secure-Signer. Funded by a grant from the Ethereum Foundation, Secure-Signer utilizes Trusted Execution Environments, specifically Intel SGX, to protect validator keys and prevent double-signing errors. This reduces the risk of slashing penalties, which are financial punishments for validator misconduct or technical failures. By lowering these risks, Puffer enables node operators to participate with a significantly smaller bond than the standard 32 ETH required by the Ethereum network, often allowing participation with as little as 1 or 2 ETH. The ecosystem utilizes two main tokens: pufETH and PUFFER. When users deposit ETH into the protocol, they receive pufETH, a native liquid restaking token. This token allows users to earn rewards from Ethereum proof of stake validation and additional restaking rewards through EigenLayer simultaneously. Unlike some other liquid staking solutions, pufETH is designed to be highly capital-efficient and remains liquid, meaning it can be used in other decentralized finance applications while the underlying assets are securing the network. The PUFFER token serves as the primary governance token for the protocol and the broader UniFi ecosystem. Token holders can participate in the decision-making process by voting on key protocol parameters, such as fee structures, service provider selections, and feature upgrades. The project also employs a vote-escrow model where users can lock their tokens to gain enhanced voting power. Beyond restaking, the project is developing the UniFi product suite, which includes a based rollup solution. This rollup aims to address fragmentation in the Layer 2 landscape and improve transaction speeds through features like execution pre-confirmations. By integrating these different components, the project seeks to provide a comprehensive infrastructure that supports Ethereum scaling while maintaining the network’s core values of trust-neutrality and permissionless access. Through its combination of secure hardware tools and accessible entry requirements, it aims to prevent the centralization of the validator set and ensure a more resilient blockchain infrastructure.
