PsyDAO is a decentralized autonomous organization, often referred to as a bioDAO, that operates at the intersection of psychedelic science and decentralized science. Established in 2022, the project was incubated by the biotech protocol Molecule and supported by the bio.xyz accelerator. It was founded by individuals from established Web3 and science organizations such as VitaDAO, Molecule, and Gitcoin. The primary mission of PsyDAO is to advance the research and development of psychedelic substances for medicinal and therapeutic use while ensuring that the resulting intellectual property remains democratized and accessible rather than monopolized by traditional pharmaceutical entities. The psy token serves as the primary governance and utility token within the PsyDAO ecosystem. Holders of the token participate in a democratic decision making process where they can vote on which research projects receive funding, how the organization allocates its resources, and the overall strategic direction of the collective. This model follows a one token, one vote principle, allowing a globally distributed community of scientists, researchers, and enthusiasts to have a direct say in the future of psychedelic medicine. In addition to the psy token, the project utilizes a specialized membership token called psyc, which is often held by core advisory members and provides more specialized governance rights. Technologically, PsyDAO leverages blockchain infrastructure to manage intellectual property through the use of IP-NFTs and fungible intellectual property tokens. This approach allows the DAO to fund research in exchange for fractional ownership of the data and patents generated by the studies. By bringing psychedelic science on-chain, the project aims to create a transparent, permissionless, and censorship-resistant repository of knowledge. Their scientific focus includes studying diverse psychedelic experiences, naturalistic usage, and the effects of novel compounds on mental health conditions and long-term wellness. The project emphasizes a philosophy of open science and community ownership.
