PARALLEL (PAR) FAQ
What is Parallel (PAR)?
Parallel (PAR) is a decentralized stablecoin protocol primarily built on Ethereum. Its flagship product is the PAR token, which holds the distinction of being the world’s first decentralized, over-collateralized stablecoin pegged 1:1 to the Euro. Unlike centralized Euro stablecoins, PAR is non-custodial and operates through smart contracts, allowing users to maintain exposure to the Euro within the decentralized ecosystem without relying on traditional financial intermediaries or centralized issuers.
How is Parallel (PAR) different from Parallel Finance (PARA)?
Although they share a similar name, these are two distinct projects. Parallel (PAR), formerly known as Mimo, is a Euro-pegged stablecoin protocol operating on Ethereum and Polygon. Parallel Finance (PARA), however, is a separate Polkadot-based decentralized finance super-app focusing on liquid staking and lending. It is important for users to distinguish between the two when researching the protocol or managing their assets, as they serve different functions and exist on different networks.
Why would a user choose a Euro-pegged stablecoin over a USD-pegged one?
PAR addresses a specific gap in the digital asset market by providing an alternative for users who prefer to hold value in Euro-denominated assets. This allows participants to remain within the blockchain ecosystem while avoiding the volatility of the US Dollar. Additionally, it offers a decentralized alternative to traditional European bank accounts, which may be subject to negative interest rates or centralized oversight, giving users more control over their Euro-pegged liquidity.
What is the process for minting new PAR tokens?
To mint PAR, users must interact with the protocol to open a "Vault." Users deposit supported collateral—such as wrapped Ethereum (wETH), wrapped Bitcoin (wBTC), or USDC—into the vault. Once the collateral is secured, the user can borrow (mint) PAR tokens against it. The amount that can be borrowed is governed by a specific limit relative to the collateral value, ensuring the system remains over-collateralized and healthy.
How does Parallel maintain the 1:1 Euro peg for the PAR token?
The protocol uses a natural arbitrage system to maintain price stability. If PAR trades below 1 Euro, borrowers are incentivized to buy the token at a discount from trading platforms to pay off their debt, which reduces supply and raises the price. If the token trades above 1 Euro, users are incentivized to mint and sell new PAR for a profit, which increases market supply and lowers the price back toward the 1:1 peg.
What roles do the MIMO and paUSD tokens play within the ecosystem?
MIMO is the governance token of the protocol, allowing holders to vote on key parameters like collateral types, fee adjustments, and protocol upgrades. MIMO holders can also stake their tokens to earn a portion of the protocol's revenue. Additionally, the protocol introduced paUSD, a decentralized USD-pegged stablecoin that operates on the same over-collateralized principles as PAR, allowing the ecosystem to cater to both Euro and US Dollar markets.
