The ORCA token serves multiple key utilities. Firstly, it enables Governance, allowing holders to participate in voting on critical protocol decisions, such as potential upgrades, adjustments to fee structures, and the allocation of treasury funds. Secondly, ORCA acts as an Incentive mechanism, distributed as rewards to liquidity providers (LPs) in specific pools, known as Aquafarms and Whirlpools. While "pure" staking can vary, ORCA can also be used in liquidity pools to earn a share of trading fees.

Orca Whirlpools represent a core innovation as Concentrated Liquidity Market Maker (CLMM) pools. Unlike traditional liquidity pools that distribute capital across all possible price points, Whirlpools empower liquidity providers (LPs) to concentrate their assets within a specific, narrower price range. This strategic concentration significantly enhances capital efficiency, meaning LPs can generate more trading fees with less capital. It also offers the potential for higher earnings, but requires active management to stay within range.

An Orca Whirlpool position goes "out of range" when the current market price of the token pair moves beyond the specific price range that the liquidity provider (LP) initially set for their concentrated liquidity. When this occurs, the position temporarily stops earning trading fees. Moreover, all the liquidity within that position becomes entirely converted into one of the two tokens in the pair. Users frequently need to rebalance or adjust their chosen price ranges to bring their position back into an active earning state.

While Orca is fundamentally built and primarily operates on the Solana blockchain, leveraging its high throughput and low transaction costs, the platform has recently initiated expansion efforts. Notably, Orca has extended its presence to Eclipse. Eclipse is recognized as a modular Layer 2 solution for Ethereum, which uniquely integrates and utilizes the Solana Virtual Machine (SVM).
