On January 1, 2024, Orbit Bridge's Ethereum Vault suffered a major exploit. An attacker gained access to seven out of ten multisig signers, leading to the theft of millions of dollars in various cryptocurrencies, including ETH, WBTC, USDT, USDC, and DAI. This incident significantly impacted the project and its community, causing concern across the ecosystem.

Orbit Chain's developer, Ozys, is collaborating with law enforcement and security experts to investigate the exploit, track, and freeze the stolen assets. While the precise attack vector is still under investigation, it was noted that a former CISO had altered firewall policies before the incident. The team has attempted communication with the perpetrators and is actively monitoring the compromised funds, demonstrating a proactive approach to recovery and accountability.

The "renewal" involves a comprehensive overhaul of the Orbit ecosystem post-exploit. It includes halting current ORC token staking and governance systems by Q4 2024, with a full resumption anticipated in January 2025. For ORC token holders, this means staked tokens will be unstaked and made accessible in user wallets on the Ethereum ecosystem, allowing for transfer to the Ethereum network or utilization in various decentralized finance protocols during this transitional phase.

The renewal will temporarily adjust ORC token inflation. Block Producer and ORC Voting Rewards distributions will halt upon the renewal proposal's passage. Inflation designated for ecosystem development, DeFi liquidity, R&D, and marketing will be suspended and accumulated, with its future policy decided by DAO voting post-renewal in early 2025. Rewards for Orbit Bridge validators and the utilization of ORC token buyback funds from layer fees will, however, remain unaffected.

As an integral part of the ongoing renewal, the Orbit Chain network itself is slated for discontinuation. Its established functionalities, which have served their purpose within the original architecture, will be systematically transferred and integrated into the broader Ethereum ecosystem. This strategic move aims to leverage Ethereum's robust infrastructure for future operations and enhance the overall resilience of the project.

Prior to the exploit and renewal, Orbit Chain functioned as an interoperability-focused blockchain and multi-asset platform. Its core purpose was to facilitate seamless asset and data transfers between diverse public blockchains, addressing the crypto ecosystem's isolation challenges. It aimed to connect token economies and enhance scalability via its Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) Protocol. The ORC token served as the utility token for transaction fees, network governance, and as collateral in various decentralized finance protocols.
