The OMG Network, originally OmiseGo, is an Ethereum-based Layer-2 scaling solution. Its primary goal was to make Ethereum transactions faster and cheaper for ETH and ERC-20 tokens. It aimed to overcome Ethereum's scalability limits by processing transactions off-chain using a Plasma-based architecture (MoreViable Plasma). This allowed for significantly higher transaction speeds and reduced costs compared to the Ethereum mainnet, addressing a critical need for efficient decentralized applications.

OMG Network utilizes a Plasma Childchain architecture known as MoreVP. It aggregates transactions off-chain into a Merkel tree. Periodically, a condensed "root hash" representing these transactions is submitted to the Ethereum mainnet for final validation. This design is non-custodial, meaning users retain control over their funds. In case of network issues, tokens deposited on Ethereum can be directly withdrawn from the mainnet, ensuring fund security and user autonomy.

The OMG token is the native cryptocurrency of the OMG Network. Its intended uses included paying for network transaction fees, maintaining operations, and staking. Upon a planned transition to a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus, OMG tokens were designed for staking to validate transactions and secure the network, with stakers earning rewards. Token holders were also envisioned to have governance rights, allowing them to vote on proposals influencing the network's development and future.

The OMG Network project has undergone significant transformation and is largely considered "abandoned" in its original standalone form as of 2025. Following a rebranding from OmiseGo and an acquisition process, its community and utility were integrated into the Boba Network. This new Ethereum Layer-2 optimistic rollup inherited OMG's legacy. While the original project's active development has ceased, the OMG token still exists, though its current activity is primarily speculative trading.

The OMG Network's community and utility were transitioned and integrated into the Boba Network. Boba Network is a new Ethereum Layer-2 optimistic rollup that emerged from a partnership involving Enya and the OMG Foundation. This strategic move aimed to provide renewed utility and an enhanced scaling solution for the project's community, building upon the foundational goals of OMG Network by offering lower gas fees and improved transaction throughput while maintaining compatibility with the Ethereum mainnet. OMG token holders received BOBA tokens via airdrop to reflect this transition.

The total supply of OMG tokens is capped at 140,245,398 OMG. The distribution included a significant portion (65.1%) allocated to investors during its Initial Coin Offering (ICO). Additionally, 5% of the total supply was distributed through an airdrop to the community. The remaining tokens were designated for the project's development team and ongoing network development efforts. No new OMG tokens will be created through mining, as the circulating supply has reached its maximum cap.
