Multichain Bridged WBTC (Moonriver)(wbtc) refers to Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) that has been transferred to the Moonriver network using the Multichain bridging protocol. Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) is an ERC-20 token that integrates Bitcoin (BTC) onto the Ethereum blockchain, allowing Bitcoin holders to participate in decentralized finance (DeFi) applications within the Ethereum ecosystem. Each WBTC is backed 1:1 by Bitcoin, meaning one WBTC is always equivalent to one Bitcoin. The process of creating WBTC involves a custodian holding Bitcoin in reserve while the corresponding WBTC is minted. Moonriver is an Ethereum-compatible blockchain environment that functions as a parachain on the Kusama network. It serves as a testing ground, or "canary network," for new code and applications under real economic conditions before they are deployed on Moonbeam, its sister network on Polkadot. Moonriver aims to enable developers to easily redeploy their Ethereum decentralized applications (dApps) within a Substrate environment. Multichain, formerly known as Anyswap, is a cross-chain bridging platform designed to facilitate the movement of assets across various blockchain networks. It supports a wide array of blockchains and works by locking the original asset on its native chain and then minting a wrapped version of that asset on the target chain. The goal of Multichain bridges is to enhance interoperability, increase liquidity, and broaden opportunities within the DeFi space by connecting different blockchain ecosystems. The Multichain Router system enables users to swap assets between supported chains efficiently. The Multichain Bridged WBTC (Moonriver) token specifically represents WBTC that has utilized the Multichain protocol to move onto the Moonriver network. This asset is designed for seamless, no-slippage transfers across these networks, leveraging Multi-Party Computation (MPC) technology to maintain decentralization and security during the bridging process. It is important to note that Multichain experienced a significant security breach in July 2023. This incident resulted in the loss of approximately $126 million in various tokens, including WBTC, from its bridges across several networks, including Moonriver.
