MimbleWimbleCoin, or MWC, is a cryptocurrency that utilizes the Mimblewimble protocol, a unique blockchain technology named after a spell from the Harry Potter series. The protocol was first introduced by an anonymous developer using the pseudonym Tom Elvis Jedusor in 2016. Mimblewimble's primary aim is to enhance privacy, scalability, and fungibility in digital transactions. The Mimblewimble protocol achieves its enhanced privacy by obscuring transaction details such as the sender, receiver, and transaction amounts. It uses cryptographic techniques like Confidential Transactions to hide the values involved, making them visible only to the transacting parties. Furthermore, it does not use traditional wallet addresses, which makes transactions inherently untraceable. Scalability is another key feature, enabled by a technique called "cut-through." This method removes unnecessary transaction data from the blockchain by aggregating multiple transactions into one and eliminating spent transactions. This results in a smaller and more efficient blockchain, which can be verified without needing to store the full transaction history. MWC also emphasizes fungibility, meaning that all coins are interchangeable and indistinguishable from one another. This is due to the protocol's untraceable nature, which prevents coins from being "tainted" by their transaction history. MimbleWimbleCoin operates on a pure proof-of-work consensus mechanism, similar to Bitcoin, and was launched in November 2019.
