MilkyWay is a decentralized protocol within the Cosmos ecosystem that specializes in liquid staking and restaking services for modular blockchains. Originally launched to support the Celestia network, it has expanded to include other modular environments like Initia and Babylon. The project aims to solve the liquidity issues inherent in traditional staking by allowing users to stake their native assets while maintaining access to their capital through liquid representations. When users stake assets such as TIA or INIT through the protocol, they receive liquid staking tokens like milkTIA or milkINIT. In addition to liquid staking, the protocol facilitates restaking, a process where these liquid tokens are used to provide security for other modular services and applications known as Actively Validated Services. This multi layered approach is designed to enhance the security and utility of the broader modular blockchain landscape. The MILK token serves as the native utility and governance token for the MilkyWay network. It plays several roles, including powering transactions, paying for gas fees, and providing on chain liquidity. Furthermore, the network relies on the token for its security through a consensus mechanism. Holders are granted governance rights, allowing them to participate in the project’s decentralized autonomous organization to vote on protocol upgrades, fee structures, and treasury management. The token also includes a mechanism for protocol revenue sharing, where a portion of the fees generated by the liquid staking services is distributed back to token holders. Technologically, MilkyWay is built using the Cosmos SDK and secured by CometBFT consensus. This architecture ensures high speed transactions and seamless interoperability with other blockchains through the Inter Blockchain Communication protocol. The project is backed by several notable venture capital firms and institutional investors, focusing on building a self sustaining and decentralized liquidity hub for the modular era of Web3.
