Loopring’s founder, Daniel Wang, left to start Taiko, a Type-1 zkEVM. Loopring is now positioning itself as a Layer 3 (L3) on Taiko. While Taiko offers generalized infrastructure, Loopring aims to be a specialized application layer for DeFi and trading, acting like an "App Store" on Taiko. The Loopring Smart Wallet employs "Social Recovery" instead of traditional seed phrases, allowing users to regain access through trusted "Guardians" (e.g., friends, family, or other personal wallets). Initially, creating this smart contract wallet on Ethereum L1 required a one-time gas fee. However, "Counterfactual Wallets" now offer a free entry point directly on L2, with L1 deployment only necessary for full security features. Looking ahead, Loopring announced it will sunset its original Smart Wallet and Dual Investment products by July 2025, pivoting towards a more decentralized "Loopring DeFi" mobile experience designed to operate across multiple networks like Taiko, Base, and Arbitrum.

Loopring gained substantial attention as the underlying infrastructure for the GameStop NFT Marketplace. While the marketplace successfully launched and integrated Loopring's technology, the broader decline in the NFT market led GameStop to reduce its crypto-related efforts. Consequently, while the technical integration remains active and functional, the initial marketing momentum and GameStop's focus on this partnership have largely shifted.
