The Golem Network is a decentralized platform that changes how computational resources are accessed and shared. It connects users globally, allowing them to either share their unused computing power or access additional resources when needed. This creates a peer-to-peer marketplace for distributed computing. The primary purpose of Golem is to offer computational power for various projects, such as artificial intelligence, cryptocurrency mining, and CGI rendering, without relying on central authorities. It aims to democratize access to computing power, providing an alternative to more expensive and restrictive centralized cloud computing services. Within the Golem Network, individuals and entities who provide their computing resources are called "Providers," and those who utilize these resources are known as "Requestors." Tasks can be broken down into smaller subtasks and distributed across multiple Providers, enabling parallel processing to boost efficiency and speed up complex computations. The Golem token, GLM, serves as the utility token and medium of exchange within this ecosystem. Requestors use GLM to pay for access to computing resources, while Providers earn GLM tokens in return for sharing their spare computational power. GLM is an ERC-20 token available on the Ethereum and Polygon networks. Initially, the project's token was GNT, launched in 2016. In November 2020, Golem initiated a migration from GNT to the new ERC-20 GLM tokens. This migration was done to improve functionality and enable better integration with other decentralized applications. Users can migrate their GNT to GLM at a 1:1 ratio, and this migration process is ongoing. The Golem Network was conceptualized in 2014 and founded in 2016, with its launch on the Ethereum mainnet in 2018. The Golem Network is governed by Golem Factory GmbH, a company based in Switzerland. The platform has also focused on artificial intelligence, introducing an AI roadmap in early 2024 to offer decentralized GPU power for AI computations, including solutions like Modelserve AI and Golem-Workers.
