kVCM is a dynamic carbon index token and the primary token of Klima 2.0. It is designed to represent the overall value and diversity of the carbon credits held within the Klima Protocol's treasury. Its main purposes include serving as the medium of exchange for carbon trades within the protocol and reflecting the full range of carbon credits, including higher-quality and more specific assets than previous iterations. The supply of kVCM expands when new carbon credits are acquired by the Protocol and contracts when credits are retired.

The Klima Protocol is transitioning from the original KLIMA token to a new token ecosystem with Klima 2.0. While the KLIMA token had an intrinsic value of 1 Base Carbon Tonne (BCT), kVCM will reflect a more diversified portfolio of carbon credits in Klima's treasury. Klima 2.0 also introduces a dual-token system, where kVCM focuses on carbon-backed assets and their pricing, while the new K2 token serves as a fixed-supply governance token for voting on carbon portfolio management, protocol revenues, and future development. Existing KLIMA holders participated in a fair launch to migrate to kVCM and K2.

kVCM tokens are ERC20 tokens and can be acquired through several methods. The easiest way for many users is to purchase them on centralized exchanges like LBank. Alternatively, users can swap other tokens for kVCM directly on decentralized exchanges, which is often a more cost-effective option. The Klima Protocol also conducted a fair launch where existing KLIMA holders could stake their tokens to receive kVCM and K2.

Holders of kVCM can engage in several activities within the Klima Protocol ecosystem. They can stake their kVCM to earn a share of ecosystem fees and a yield in newly-minted kVCM. Providing liquidity for kVCM in core pools (e.g., kVCM/USDC, kVCM/wETH, kVCM/K2 on decentralized exchanges) allows holders to earn rewards. Furthermore, locked kVCM can be used for governance, enabling participation in voting on carbon class pricing and allocations, which influences the types of carbon credits the protocol acquires. Finally, kVCM serves as the medium of exchange for all carbon trades and is burned when carbon credits are retired.

The Klima Protocol acts as a decentralized liquidity hub and autonomous asset manager for carbon credits. Its vision for Klima 2.0 is to create an open, interoperable carbon market that addresses inefficiencies in pricing, liquidity, and market access. By integrating DeFi with carbon finance, Klima 2.0 aims to enhance transparency, price discovery, and sustainability in global carbon markets. The protocol prioritizes user ownership and governance, directing 100% of the value it generates back to its users through token incentives.
