The $HABITAT token serves as the coordination engine for the network. It is primarily used for staking to gain network access and coordinating incentives between energy providers and compute users. Furthermore, it plays a vital role in funding the expansion of real-world infrastructure. By acting as a digital primitive, it bridges the gap between decentralized infrastructure and physical energy production.

The system operates through a dual physical and digital process. Physically, surplus solar energy that would otherwise be wasted due to grid limitations is directed into modular data centers located onsite to power AI and GPU workloads. Digitally, users stake $HABITAT tokens to generate Energy Points, which represent their share of the network's energy capacity. These points are then used to mint Compute Credits, which are tokenized vouchers that can be redeemed for actual GPU processing cycles.

Renewable energy sources often produce more power than the electrical grid can handle, a phenomenon known as curtailment, leading to significant energy waste. Simultaneously, the demand for high-performance computing power to fuel AI development is surging. Habitat captures this surplus wasted energy and converts it into a valuable digital product: green compute power. This approach optimizes renewable energy utilization while providing the necessary infrastructure for the growing AI and blockchain sectors.

Energy Points and Compute Credits are two distinct components of the Habitat economy. Energy Points are earned by staking $HABITAT tokens and represent a user's proportional share of the network’s total energy capacity. In contrast, Compute Credits are minted using those Energy Points. These credits act as functional vouchers that can either be redeemed for actual GPU cycles to run workloads or traded within the Habitat Marketplace.

Habitat’s flagship project is a 45MW solar park located in Bulgaria, which houses their first high-performance computing facility. The protocol is designed for scalability; it can build Habitat-native parks or retrofit existing renewable energy sites. By using Modular Data Centers, the protocol can integrate with various energy infrastructures that experience high curtailment. Engineering, Procurement, and Construction firms facilitate this by embedding Habitat’s technology directly into solar and energy setups.

It is important to distinguish the Habitat Protocol on Solana from other entities. It is not related to Genopets Habitats, which are in-game NFTs for a move-to-earn game. It is also distinct from Habitat for Humanity, the global housing non-profit. Additionally, while an older governance toolkit named Habitat existed on Ethereum in 2021, the current Habitat Protocol is a separate evolution and rebrand specifically focused on energy and decentralized infrastructure within the Solana ecosystem.
