Gods Unchained is a competitive digital trading card game that uses blockchain technology to grant players true ownership of their in-game assets. Developed by the Australian studio Immutable and led by game director Chris Clay, who previously worked on Magic The Gathering Arena, the project is one of the most prominent titles in the Web3 gaming space. The game features strategic, turn-based battles where players build decks of fantasy cards to compete against others in various modes. The core gameplay involves players choosing one of six gods, each with unique abilities and play styles. Using a mana system, players deploy creatures, cast spells, and use relics to reduce their opponent's health to zero. A key feature of the project is digital ownership. In traditional games, players often lose access to their items if a game shuts down or they stop playing. In Gods Unchained, cards of a certain quality are minted as non-fungible tokens or NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain. This allows players to trade, sell, or collect their cards outside of the game environment, much like physical trading card games. To solve the issues of high transaction costs and slow speeds on the main Ethereum network, the project utilizes Immutable X, a Layer 2 scaling solution. This technology enables gas-free minting and trading of cards, making it possible for players to engage with the marketplace without paying heavy fees for every transaction. The native utility token of the ecosystem is known as GODS. This token is an ERC-20 token that serves as the primary currency for the game's economy. Players can earn the token by participating in gameplay activities such as daily ranked matches and special events. The token has several distinct uses: First, it is used for crafting. Players can use the token to fuse multiple copies of the same card into a higher-quality NFT version in a process called the Forge. Second, it serves as a governance token, giving holders the ability to vote on proposals that affect the game's future direction. Third, the token can be used to purchase expansion card packs and other items within the official marketplace. Finally, there is a staking mechanism where players can contribute their tokens to a rewards pool and earn incentives based on their participation. Founded by James and Robbie Ferguson, the project focuses on a free-to-play model that allows anyone to start playing without an initial purchase.
