ENS serves a purpose similar to the traditional Domain Name System or DNS, which translates IP addresses into website names. However, ENS is designed for the Web3 ecosystem. It allows users to map their names not only to wallet addresses but also to decentralized websites, content hashes, and various metadata. This makes interacting with the blockchain more accessible and reduces the risk of errors when sending funds. The architecture of the system is based on two main components: the Registry and the Resolver. The Registry is a smart contract that maintains a list of all domains and subdomains while storing information about the owner and the resolver. The Resolver is responsible for the actual process of translating names into addresses or other identifiers. Because these domains are issued as non-fungible tokens or NFTs, they are unique, digital assets that can be owned and transferred by users. Governance of the project is managed through a Decentralized Autonomous Organization known as the ENS DAO. The ENS token is an ERC-20 token that serves as the governance tool for this community. Holders of the token can participate in the decision-making process by submitting proposals or voting on matters such as protocol upgrades, treasury management, and changes to the project constitution. This ensures that the development and direction of the service remain in the hands of its users rather than a centralized entity.
