Ethena USTB is a new stablecoin designed to maintain a 1:1 peg with the US dollar. It represents an expansion of Ethena's stablecoin offerings and serves as an independent product with a different risk profile compared to Ethena's existing USDe synthetic dollar.

Ethena USTB is fully backed by BlackRock's on-chain BUIDL fund, which stands for BlackRock USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund. This fund primarily invests in US dollars, short-term US Treasury bills, and repurchase agreements. This backing by real-world assets provides a traditional and stable foundation for the stablecoin. Securitize also assists in the tokenization process.

Ethena's existing USDe is a synthetic stablecoin that maintains its $1 peg through cash-and-carry arbitrage, using derivative hedging strategies with cryptocurrencies as collateral. In contrast, USTB adopts a more traditional stablecoin structure, relying on real-world assets held within BlackRock's BUIDL fund. This fundamental difference gives USTB a distinct risk profile.

Ethena envisions USTB as a complementary asset that can enhance the resilience of USDe, especially during challenging market conditions. If negative funding rates occur, Ethena's governance allows for the reallocation of backing assets from USDe to USTB. This mechanism aims to mitigate risks associated with negative funding rate environments and bolster the overall stability of the protocol.

Ethena plans to list USTB on centralized exchanges like LBank, where USDe is already used as margin collateral. This provides exchange partners with a choice between two distinct Ethena products for margin collateral, potentially broadening adoption. Generally, USTB can be used like any other dollar for payments, trading, or holding value, leveraging its blockchain-based nature for faster and cheaper transactions than traditional fiat systems.

While USTB's backing by BlackRock's BUIDL fund aims for stability, general Web3 and stablecoin risks still apply, including smart contract risks, operational risks from tokenization, and potential regulatory changes. Specific to USTB, its stability is directly tied to the performance and liquidity of the underlying assets within the BUIDL fund. Transparency reports showing 100% reserves are crucial for user confidence.
