The name eBTC refers to two prominent decentralized finance initiatives on the Ethereum blockchain. One is a synthetic bitcoin protocol created by BadgerDAO and Lido, while the other is a liquid restaking token managed by the platform ether.fi. The BadgerDAO eBTC protocol is a decentralized system that enables users to borrow a synthetic bitcoin asset by using staked ether as collateral. It operates using a model known as a collateralized debt position, where participants deposit their staked ether into a smart contract to mint the eBTC token. A characteristic of this system is its borrowing model that avoids traditional interest fees. Instead, the protocol is designed to capture a portion of the staking rewards generated by the underlying ether collateral to sustain its operations. This design is intended to be transparent and resistant to censorship, using immutable smart contracts and decentralized price oracles to manage the asset and maintain system stability. It provides a way for users to manage positions between the values of ether and bitcoin directly on the Ethereum network without relying on centralized custodians or bridges. The ether.fi version of eBTC is categorized as a liquid restaking token. This project is designed to give bitcoin holders a way to earn multiple layers of rewards while keeping their assets liquid. It is backed by staked bitcoin assets that are utilized across various restaking platforms. By depositing bitcoin related tokens into the system, users receive eBTC, which can then be used across other applications in the decentralized finance space. The protocol manages the deployment of these assets into security layers to earn various network rewards from platforms such as Babylon or EigenLayer. This approach aims to simplify the process of restaking for users while providing a token that represents their participation in these security networks. Both versions of eBTC aim to integrate the value of bitcoin into the Ethereum ecosystem, but they serve different user needs.
