Chain-key Ethereum, commonly known as ckETH, is a digital twin of Ether that operates natively on the Internet Computer blockchain. It is designed to provide a seamless and secure integration between the Ethereum and Internet Computer networks. Unlike traditional wrapped tokens that rely on centralized bridges or third-party custodians, ckETH uses advanced chain-key cryptography to achieve a trust-minimized connection. The core technology behind ckETH is threshold ECDSA signatures. This allows smart contracts on the Internet Computer, known as canisters, to directly hold and manage Ether on the Ethereum mainnet. When a user deposits Ether into a specific helper contract on the Ethereum network, the Internet Computer's minter canister detects the transaction and mints an equivalent amount of ckETH for the user. Conversely, when a user wants to retrieve their original Ether, the ckETH is burned on the Internet Computer, and the system automatically signs and sends a transaction on the Ethereum network to release the funds to the user's address. Because ckETH is backed one-to-one by Ether held on the mainnet, it maintains the same utility as the original asset while gaining the technical benefits of the Internet Computer. One of the primary advantages is the elimination of bridge risk, which has historically been a major vulnerability in decentralized finance. By removing the need for intermediary bridges, ckETH offers a more secure way to move assets across chains. Additionally, ckETH provides significantly improved performance for users. Transactions involving ckETH on the Internet Computer are processed with near-instant finality, typically taking only a few seconds. The transaction costs are also much lower than typical gas fees on the Ethereum mainnet, often amounting to just a few cents. This makes it an efficient option for decentralized applications, such as exchanges and lending platforms, that require high-speed and low-cost operations. In the broader Web3 ecosystem, ckETH serves as a foundational component for Chain Fusion, a set of technologies intended to make different blockchains work together as if they were a single environment.
