CHAIN-KEY ETHEREUM (CKETH) FAQ
What is Chain-key Ethereum (ckETH)?
ckETH is an ICRC-compliant token on the Internet Computer (ICP) that acts as a digital twin of Ether (ETH). It is backed 1:1 by physical ETH held on the Ethereum mainnet. By utilizing Chain Fusion technology, ckETH allows users to transact with Ethereum-backed value on the ICP network, benefiting from significantly higher speeds and lower transaction costs than the Ethereum mainnet.
Is ckETH the same as traditional wrapped ETH (WETH)?
While ckETH is technically a twin of ETH, it differs significantly from traditional wrapped tokens like WETH. Most wrapped tokens rely on centralized intermediaries or multisig bridges, which can be points of failure. In contrast, ckETH uses 'bridgeless' Chain-key cryptography, meaning the integration is native to the blockchain protocol itself, removing the need for third-party custodians.
How does the 'bridgeless' integration between ICP and Ethereum work?
The integration uses two core technologies: HTTPS Outcalls and Threshold ECDSA. HTTPS Outcalls allow ICP smart contracts to directly query Ethereum nodes to verify transactions. Threshold ECDSA enables the ICP network to sign Ethereum transactions securely. This allows the ICP blockchain to directly control the Ethereum wallet holding the underlying ETH, ensuring a decentralized and trustless process.
Who controls the underlying ETH and is it secure?
The underlying ETH is held in a smart contract on the Ethereum mainnet controlled by the Network Nervous System (NNS), which is the decentralized DAO that governs the Internet Computer. No single person or company holds the keys. Additionally, the architecture is highly secure; the underlying technology has been audited by reputable firms like Trail of Bits to ensure the safety of the assets.
What is the process for minting ckETH?
To mint ckETH, users send ETH to the specific Ethereum Helper Contract (0x7574eB42cA208A4f6960ECCAfDF186D627dCC175) and include their ICP principal in the transaction metadata. The ICP minter canister detects the deposit and mints the equivalent 1:1 ckETH to the user's address. The process typically takes around 20 minutes to account for Ethereum's block confirmation requirements.
What are the fees and transaction speeds associated with ckETH?
Transfers on the Internet Computer are nearly instant, taking only 1–2 seconds. Minting and withdrawing involve the Ethereum mainnet, which takes approximately 20 minutes. Regarding fees, users pay Ethereum gas fees for minting and withdrawals. However, once the ckETH is on the ICP network, internal transfers cost a negligible fixed fee, making it an efficient option for decentralized finance and trading.
