Avail is a modular blockchain infrastructure project designed to address the challenges of data availability and interoperability within the Web3 ecosystem. It aims to unify the fragmented landscape of various blockchain networks by providing a scalable and secure foundation for developers to build decentralized applications and custom chains. The project is structured into three primary layers that work together to create a cohesive environment. The first is Avail DA, a specialized data availability layer. It uses advanced cryptographic techniques like KZG polynomial commitments and erasure coding to ensure that transaction data is published and verifiable. This allows light clients to verify data availability through a process called data availability sampling without needing to download entire blocks, which improves scalability and lowers the barrier for participation. The second layer is Avail Nexus, which serves as a coordination hub for interoperability. It utilizes zero-knowledge proofs to aggregate and verify transactions across different blockchain ecosystems, such as Ethereum and various rollups. Nexus aims to simplify the user experience by enabling seamless asset movement and cross-chain interactions without the complexity typically associated with traditional bridges. The third component is Avail Fusion, a shared security framework. Fusion enhances the network security by allowing users to stake a variety of mature assets, such as Bitcoin or Ethereum, alongside the project native token to secure the blockchain. This multi-asset staking model provides a robust layer of cryptoeconomic security for the entire ecosystem. The native token of the project, referred to as AVAIL, is the central utility and governance asset of the network. It is used by participants to pay for transaction and bridging fees within the ecosystem. Additionally, the token is used for staking, where holders can delegate their tokens to validators to secure the network and participate in the decentralized governance process, allowing them to vote on protocol upgrades and future developments. Originally incubated within Polygon and led by co-founder Anurag Arjun, Avail spun out as an independent entity in 2023 to maintain a neutral position as a cross-chain infrastructure provider.
