The ALT token is integral to the AltLayer ecosystem, serving four key functions. Firstly, it acts as an economic bond, staked alongside restaked assets, and can be slashed if operators misbehave. Secondly, it grants governance rights, allowing holders to vote on crucial protocol decisions. Thirdly, ALT is used to pay for various intra-network services, such as creating or verifying rollups. Lastly, it incentivizes operators in the ecosystem, who earn ALT rewards for their contributions to sequencing and verification, ensuring network participation.

Users can stake ALT directly on the AltLayer platform to secure Actively Validated Services (AVSes). AltLayer typically employs a dual-staking model, where participants can stake both their ALT tokens and restaked ETH, facilitated through EigenLayer. By doing so, users provide vital crypto-economic security to various rollups while earning rewards for their participation. The liquid restaking token, reALT, represents your share of the staked ALT pool and allows for further participation in the ecosystem while earning rewards.

Ephemeral Rollups are temporary, purpose-built rollups designed to efficiently handle specific high-traffic events. These can include periods like NFT mints, major game launches, or other short-lived demand spikes. Once the intense activity concludes, the rollup's state is finalized and settled on a more permanent base layer, such as Ethereum. The rollup then "dissolves," eliminating ongoing maintenance costs and resource consumption. This approach optimizes resource usage, offering a scalable solution for transient needs without long-term overhead.
