Aion is a third-generation blockchain project designed to solve the problem of isolation between different blockchain networks. Launched in 2017 by the Canadian company Nuco, the project focuses on interoperability, which allows disparate blockchains to communicate and exchange data or value with one another. Aion positions itself as the connective tissue that enables a decentralized internet where independent networks, such as Ethereum or private enterprise chains, can work together seamlessly rather than operating in silos. The technology behind Aion is built on a multi-tier architecture consisting of three primary layers: the communication layer, the consensus layer, and the application layer. The communication layer is the most distinct feature, utilizing specialized protocols and blockchain bridges to facilitate cross-chain transactions. Its core public blockchain, known as Aion-1, is a purpose-built system that serves as a hub to coordinate these connections. Developers can use the network to build decentralized applications that leverage features from multiple blockchains simultaneously, such as combining the security of one network with the smart contract capabilities of another. Over time, the project evolved into The Open Application Network, or OAN. This transition shifted the focus toward creating a public infrastructure for what the team calls Open Applications. These are programs designed to give users more sovereignty over their own data and digital identity, moving away from the closed ecosystems of traditional platform economies. In this model, the network acts as an open-source layer for hosting applications that are universally accessible across different platforms. The AION token serves as the native digital asset of this ecosystem. It is primarily used to secure the network through a consensus mechanism and to pay for the computational resources required to process transactions and run smart contracts. It also functions as the fuel for cross-chain operations, incentivizing the validators and participants who maintain the bridges between different blockchain environments. By using the token to access and secure the network, the project aims to create a self-sustaining economic model that supports a global, interconnected blockchain infrastructure. The project was founded by Matthew Spoke, who previously contributed to the Ethereum ecosystem, and is governed by the non-profit Aion Foundation. While the landscape of blockchain interoperability has grown significantly since its inception, Aion remains a notable early pioneer in the movement to unify decentralized systems.
