Aave v3 WETH, also known as AWETH, is a token that exists within the Aave ecosystem. It functions as a representation of Wrapped Ether (WETH) that has been deposited into the Aave v3 decentralized finance protocol. AWETH is categorized as an "aToken," which is a type of yield-bearing token. Users receive AWETH after they supply WETH to the Aave v3 Ethereum network. The primary purpose of AWETH is to facilitate the use of wrapped Ether within decentralized finance applications. Within the Aave v3 protocol, when an asset like WETH is supplied, aTokens such as aWETH are minted. The balance of these aTokens increases over time due to the borrowing activity that occurs in the liquidity pool, meaning they accrue interest. When a user wishes to withdraw their original WETH and earned interest, they redeem their aTokens for the underlying asset. The Aave protocol exclusively uses ERC-20 reserve tokens. To accommodate network gas tokens like Ether, the WrappedTokenGateway is a helper smart contract. This contract enables gas tokens to be wrapped into WETH or unwrapped from WETH to interact with Aave Pool functions, including supplying assets, borrowing, repaying loans, and withdrawing assets. Aave v3 itself is a non-custodial liquidity protocol that operates on Ethereum and other major networks. It provides the infrastructure for users to supply assets to earn interest and to use those supplied assets as collateral for borrowing.
