The difference between SUI's circulating and total supply is due to its planned unlock schedule. With a total supply of 10 billion tokens, tokens are progressively released into circulation over time, following a predefined vesting schedule for various stakeholders, including the core team, investors, and ecosystem development. This controlled release mechanism aims to ensure a stable and sustainable growth path for the network and prevent sudden market shocks.
The SUI token serves multiple essential functions within its native network. Firstly, it is used to pay gas fees for all transaction execution and computation. Secondly, SUI tokens can be staked to participate in securing the network, where stakers delegate their tokens to validators and earn rewards. Thirdly, SUI enables governance, allowing holders to vote on key protocol upgrades and decisions. Lastly, it fuels a unique Storage Fund, where users pay upfront for data storage to compensate future validators for ongoing data maintenance.
Move is a specialized programming language designed for secure, verifiable asset management on blockchains. It was developed with a strong emphasis on preventing common smart contract vulnerabilities. Move achieves this by treating digital assets as "resources" that cannot be duplicated, accidentally deleted, or re-used after being spent, directly addressing issues like re-entrancy attacks prevalent in other contract environments.
